Young Adult Children

Early adulthood can be a daunting and confusing time. You’re asked to quickly transition from being a student, guided by your parents, teachers and coaches, to being a fully independent working adult.
Young Adult Children

Family Young Adults

Early adulthood can be a daunting and confusing time. You’re asked to quickly transition from being a student, guided by your parents, teachers and coaches, to being a fully independent working adult.

Unlike the academic world, adult life doesn’t come with a personalized course syllabus, built in accountability, readily available counselors, and a precise growth measurement system. Without the framework of a support system, many young adults feel ill-equipped to navigate key life decisions, develop a personal vision and to become fully independent.

Even though this new reality is exciting and empowering, the pressure to succeed and to make the right decisions can, at times, leave you feeling overwhelmed, fearful, confused, anxious and sometimes … stuck.

OnCourse young adult programs provide a launching pad for you to address your current realities, and then courageously transition into and embrace new realities.

Parent—Young Adult Connection Retreat

Most parent-to-young-adult relationships fall somewhere along the spectrum below:

Stages of Parent to YA relationship

The enduring success of a maturing young adult requires the ongoing support and encouragement from parents—in all aspects of the young adult’s life. Both the parent(s) and the young adult must commit to interact as transparent and vulnerable adults, releasing self-righteousness and stretching toward one another.

At this experiential retreat the OnCourse guides facilitate candid and compassionate dialogue between the parent(s) and young adult. Both have the opportunity to address lingering concerns, and shift into a collaborative and loving adult-to-adult relationship.

The retreat includes:

  • “Rules of engagement” for an authentic family dynamic between—and within—the family generations
  • A rite-of-passage for releasing the prior parent-adolescent relationship, and then embracing the new adult-to-adult relationship
  • Tools on how best to encourage and empower young adult children to realize their own destiny
  • Guidance on sustaining a “Drama-Free Family,” defined by authentic interactions, mutual respect, prudence, adaptability, stewardship, lifelong learning, and self-responsibility.

When I was 22 years old I joined a peer support group led by Adam and Paul. I truly feel lucky that I have had exposure to this unique dynamic. In an open environment with absolute trust, I have had the opportunity to be myself, speak my mind, learn from others that I respect, and get useful feedback on different aspects of my life. I can wholeheartedly claim that with support of this group I am taking full advantage of my life, living out my definition of success, comfortable with who I am, and confident in my path.

Four years out of law school, I joined a peer support group led by Adam and Paul. Without the structure of school that I had known for so long, I found my approach to life more reactive than proactive, allowing certain aspects of my life to slip away. Although progressing forward in my professional and personal life, I felt a nagging sense of becoming unmoored. Within the structure of my forum, I learned to be intentional about where I focus my energy. After two years, I now have clarity around my sense of direction and purpose. My relationship with my wife, my family and my friends are also stronger because I am aware of and can openly communicate my needs and motivators. With the support and accountability of this group, I am confident that I will achieve a full life, well lived.

Adam, inspired me to explore my inner workings, affirm my desires, and to embrace who I am. I could always see the door, but Adam provided the guidance and motivation I needed to step through it.

I first connected with Jim in my mid-twenties while juggling work, grad school, and living in New York—close to burnout and not quite sure how to let go of some outgrown relationships. I learned the tools to find my balance, take a step back from drama-prone relationships, establish authentic footing at work, and regain my drive.
